In the pursuit of accurate data, I'm forwarding this message from the
LightWave newsgroup, which was posted by Brad Peebler from NewTek....
----------------------------------------------------------------------
There seems to be a lot of confusion about NewTek Systems Group. Here
is the charter that NewTek Systems Group has put together. I hope it
clears things up.
BP
NewTek Systems Group
Company Charter
The goal of NewTek Systems Group, a joint venture between NewTek, Inc.
and DeskStation Technology, is to advance and optimize the capabilities
of RISC based (MIPS and Alpha) Windows NT workstations for use in 3D
graphics and desktop video applications.
The joint venture allows each company to leverage their relative
strengths in software and hardware development toward the production
of a professional workstation that will compete in both the areas of
performance and price with others in the market.
The first products available through NSG:
NewTek Raptor MIPS R4600
Alpha 21064A
Alpha 21164
All available in various clock speeds.
LightWave 3D MIPS and DEC Alpha
Alpha and MIPS based LightWave 3D, for Windows NT, will be available
exclusively through NewTek Systems Group in two forms:
1) Part of a turnkey system on any NewTek Raptor. Each of these systems
will be configured to the specifications required by the purchaser.
2) LightWave 3D as a standalone product priced at $1995. These units
will be sold direct from NewTek Systems Group.
Current owners of Alpha and MIPS based NT workstations or anyone
purchasing one of these systems in the future will be able to acquire
LightWave 3D for their systems through NSG at any time.
The Future:
NewTek, Inc. will continue to develop LightWave for all platforms
currently specified (Amiga, Intel, DEC Alpha, MIPS and SGI) with the
potential to add others to the mix. NewTek Systems Group will drive
the optimization of LightWave for RISC based NT systems.
NewTek Systems Group will also pursue the development of additional
video tools which will provide greater performance and flexibility
when coupled with the power of the RISC based processor.
The Price:
The development of the Alpha and MIPS based products will take
additional resources, physical and financial. Considering the relative
size of the market and NSG's goal to provide superior 3D graphics and
video products for the professional marketplace we have determined
that a price increase is unavoidable. Based upon the research that we
have done a $1995 price for Alpha and MIPS, for Windows NT, based
LightWave allows the program to remain the clear leader in price and
performance. The price increase is effective immediately.
Conclusion:
NewTek Systems Group shares the NewTek philosophy of supplying the most
powerful tools at the lowest possible price in the market segment that
it serves. NSG is committed to bring the most creative, compelling and
affordable graphics and video tools to the professional market.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hope this clears up some of the confusion and bad feelings....
